Story of the Week. FROG

What Killed the dog

What killed the Dog

Once a dog ran into a museum- where all the walls, the ceilng, the door and even the floor were made of mirror.
Seeing this the dog froze in surprise in the middle of the hall.
A whole pack of dogs surrounded him from all sides, from above and below.
Just in case, the dog bared his teeth all the reflections responded to it in the same way.
Frightened, the dog frantically barked – the reflections imitated the bark and increased it many times.
The dog barked even harder and the echo was keeping up.
The dog tossed from one side to another, biting the air – his reflections also tossed around snapping their teeth.
Next day in the morning the museum security guards found the miserable dog, lifeless and surrounded by a million reflections of lifeless dogs.
There was nobody, who would make any harm to the dog. The dog died by fighting with his own reflections.
Like the dog saw danger when there was none, in investing scores of investors see danger when there is none.
Every time the markets turn choppy people see danger and become fearful.
They turn to media for education not realising that media never educates. On the contrary media makes sensation and accentuates the fear.
Having already been caught in the web of his own fear arising out of paucity of knowledge the media exposure acts as the icing on the cake making Mr Investor sink into the ocean of self created fear.
All it would have taken was the services of a good Financial Distributor who would have forced him to wear a seat belt and sit tight till the turbulent phase of the journey ended and all was calm again.
Such opportunity losses prevent us from reaching our goals leaving us with a deprived life.

compunding lessons From Swimming

 Compounding Lessons in Swimming

Have you ever noticed that when you set out to swim, the first few rounds do seem like an ordeal and as you continue to swim, it increasingly gets easier.

The first 5 rounds seem to be the toughest. The next 5 easier. The next 5 even more easier but the last 5 seems like a breeze.

At the end of 20 rounds, if you have spare time, doing another 5 is a non-issue. It just gets done.

Isn't this quite counter-intuitive.

Normally one gets tired with time. But in exercising one notices quite the contrary. Your energy levels rise as you exercise more.

This is so much like 'power of compounding' in personal finance. If you do an SIP for 15 years, the initial years need not leave you so happy because your assets may not have moved up much.

But if you sustain your investment zeal and take the journey across 15 years, you'll realise that you are now having fun and making up your mind to invest in the next 5 years isn't much of a challenge.

Also the wealth created over the next 5 years turns out to be more than the wealth created in the first 15 years.

As they say, 'first you work for your money and then your money works for you'.

The four Smart Students

Why do people commit FINANCIAL suicide ?

Why do people commit FINANCIAL suicide ?
Would you ever drive a car if you do not know driving?
Obviously not because you could kill yourself.
However, if you were told that the outcome of the accident would be felt after 40 years.
What would you do then?
Perhaps most of us would take to driving despite lack of knowledge.
After all 40 years is a long time. Who cares what happens then.
Human nature is such that we are only concerned about our immediate future.
Unfortunately, this is the principle commonly applied by people in 'personal investing'.
Therefore it is not surprising that we continue investing in Fixed Deposits. After all the consequences of such financial misadventures has no immediate impact.
Most people investing in Fixed Deposits are earning either 'business' income or a 'salary' income that takes care of their immediate needs.
Who really cares what happens in the distant future?
People conveniently reason it out that they will cross the bridge when the time comes.
But this 'thinking' is extremely dangerous to say the least.
When people do not make the right decisions about investing during the good days of their lives when they are young and energetic, they will find no bridge to cross during their 'not so good' days when old age strikes them.
As far as investing is concerned, 'delays' certainly prove to be costly.
Also, we need to realise what appears to be a distant future isn't so distant after all for 'time' flies and how.
Therefore, it is actually dangerous to make 'personal finance' decisions without consulting an expert in Personal Finance.

The Security Guard for Ur Wealth

Having a security guard does not mean that your home should be burgled every night and that he should be fighting off the burglars every night.

A guard provides us peace of mind.

You are happy to have him standing in front of  your house day in and day out despite of theft.

Even if several years pass and there isn't any attempt of theft, we never regret having the security guard outside our house. In fact we will be happy to have him there for years together without any experience of theft.

Likewise, having a Financial Distributor does not mean you need to engage him on a daily basis.

He too is like the security guard. The only difference being the security guard looks after your home while the Financial Distributor looks after your wealth.

His being there gives us peace of mind because we know that while we may be busy with other work, he is looking after our wealth.

He guards us against incorrect investor behaviour that we can show up from time to time

He guards us against making untimely redemptions

He ensures that we invest regularly and stay invested for the long term.

Just being there on our behalf guarding our wealth is a job by itself and needs to be done well.

Dreams

Dreams

In marketing it is important to 'own' a word in the the minds of people to succeed. Owning a word is not something as easy as paying up a price and buying it.
It takes the effort of staying focused over time and of course one cannot own a 'word' that is not a key attribute.
Volvo owns 'safety', Federal Express owns 'overnight' and likewise.
Clearly there's a lesson for Financial Distributors, the marketers of equity.
What word should one attach to  "equity" that can be owned, that will be meaningful for the target audience and that will differentiate.
Perhaps that word is 'dreams'.
All of us have dreams. Somebody has a dream to own a large house, somebody has a dream to send his or her child for higher studies abroad, somebody has a dream to build a hospital, somebody has a dream to start their own restaurant, etc etc.
These dreams will never turn to reality without long term investing in the best 'return' yielding asset which is equity.
So don't let your dreams just be dreams.
Start your SIP and nurture it with time and make your dream a reality.

World Savings Day

 World Savings Day special:

Teh Little Princes

The Little Princess

A mother was reading a fairy tale for her little daughter.

"And then the princess found herself locked in a tower surrounded by a stinky moat with crocodiles and a huge scary dragon guarding the door," read the mother, with her eyes wide and voice deep.

Then, she made a sad face and continued softly, "So, the poor princess waited and waited for her prince to come–"

"But, why was she waiting for the prince, mumma?!" asked the little girl, impatiently.

The mother added, "To come and save her, silly."

"But, mumma, why did she need a prince to save her?" the girl asked again.

"Uhh... hmm..." the mother was at a loss of words.

The little girl said proudly, "If it were me, instead of waiting for years and years for a prince, I would have tamed the dragon and flew out of the window.

I would have rescued myself."

She discarded the book and walked away, "This princess is stupid."

The mother whispered with a broad smile, "I guess it is time to rewrite the fairy tales."

#ModernFairyTales

Lets teach our daughters to be self sufficient and independent rather than waiting for a prince or a miracle to happen to them..

#ModernInvestmentTales

Likewise we also have to rewrite the investment story of the past. As we know past is not the future as far investments are concerned.

Just like the social order is changing every 10 to 15 years ( these days even 5 years is seen as a generation ) so also our investment strategy needs to change. Haven't we all known for long enough that "Change is the only constant".

1) Like the girl could not relate to the princess waiting for the prince to rescue her so also an investor today cannot wait for 'old generation financial instruments like Fixed Deposits' to rescue him or her.

2) Just like the girl thought of taming the dragon, so also every person should think of taming volatility / uncertainty of the stock markets by getting educated in personal finance.

3) And like the girl said she would fly out of the window into the world of freedom, likewise investors should aim to fly into the world of financial freedom by investing in appropriate asset classes.

A Financial Distributor is the person who can provide the best guidance.

In the past "fixed deposits" and "company deposits" gave a higher rate of interest which was sufficient to keep inflation away. Hence at that point in time the role of the Financial Distributor was comparatively limited.

However, today the environment is a lot more complex. People are living longer, job and salary security have nearly gone, retirement age is falling every passing year.

Fixed deposits and fixed income instruments have lost their teeth and have turned benign. Beyond serving the investor for 2 to 3 years these fixed income products have become a liability.

There are many more products in the market and each comes with its own merits and demerits.

It is important to know which produced suits the investor and which does not. Every investor has his or her unique requirements. No longer does one product fits all and hence one cannot invest blindly.

Professional guidance and expertise can help one sail into the world of financial freedom.

Even though you may invest under the Financial Distributor's guidance, it is always recommended that you understand what you're doing.

In this regard, your Financial Distributor will be happy to first educate you before guiding you to your investment plan.

One must also remember that in life and particularly in investing, 'time' is everything and losing "time" is unpardonable. You don't get a second chance if you allow "time" to pass by.

So contact your Financial Distributor before it gets too late.

Story of the Week

Investing

If not in Cricket, can you be a Dhoni in investing at least.

When I see people cursing Dhoni for the one run defeat against West Indies saying all kind of things such as he isn't lucky any longer, he has lost his Midas though and that the past was just like a fluke etc., I am reminded of the scores of investors who panic when the market's startle them by a suddenly correction and they react by selling off their investments.

A champion investor is like Dhoni, Kohli and their ilk who despite being in the middle of the battle zone maintains their cool and takes setbacks in their stride only to come back stronger from the experience.

So before investing, decide what kind of investor you are?

The Lobster Story

Lobsters are part of a large family of crustaceans. They have a hard exoskeleton shell.

In order for the lobster to grow, at various stages of its life, it must molt. In other words, it has to get rid of its old shell and start to form a new one.
So what you might say. Well for about 20-30 minutes the lobster is vulnerable whilst molting, it essentially becomes a piece of meat for other aquatic creatures on the prowl.
The Lobster knows this, and has taken certain precautions to try to stop them from being as vulnerable such as forming a thin skin before it molts, and changing colour.
However, for the most part they know that in order to grow larger they must get over their fear of being vulnerable and just shed their old shell.
In investing too we need to overcome our fear of markets and invest in equity despite of the volatility and the best method is investing through SIP.
Like when the lobster is changing it's shell, it develops a thin skin and changes its colour, in the same way an SIP protects an investor during a market correction by buying more units which averages the cost.
But to grow, a lobster has to overcome the fear of other predators and go about the work of shedding its skin.
Investors too likewise should go about their work of sustaining their SIPs under any market conditions by overcoming the fear should they wish to grow their investment and quality of life.

It is Never Easy

It is never easy
For those of you who follow financial media would have been aware of China scare, commodity crash, market corrections etc.
People listen more to financial media when going gets tough. Financial media amply your fear during such times.
The more you listen to media, the frequently you keep checking your portfolio; it makes it difficult not to react. Reactions during such times cause irreversible damage to one's wealth creation goal.
As I always say making money from equity is simple but not easy.
You need to learn to ignore worries of the world. There has always been some problem or another which dominate our mind space. There are very rare spells when nothing bad seems to happen.
'Buy & hold' would look easy when the market is going up. The real test comes during these times of corrections.
Unless one has very strong emotional control, making money from the market is tough.
The 3 key traits required to create wealth are long term orientation, patience and discipline.
Time can do wonder to your portfolio and wealth if you learn to ignore volatility.
Most people fail because they yield to fear and panic during bad times, act impulsively due to volatility and forget long term picture.
India would grow and do very well in the next few decades. This would get reflected on corporate performance and hence stock markets. If you can get this broader picture correct, then why worry about day to day news or short term outlook?
Successful investors take a broad view of the future and learn to ignore every day volatility. India has been growing well for last few decades and would continue to scale new heights in the decades to come. Equity is for you only if you have faith in future.
As I've pointed with data, only a small percentage gets rich from markets. These are the ones who have patience to live through ups and downs, follow investment discipline irrespective of bull and bear markets and stay invested for decade or decades.
For most of us, equity is the only way to create financial independence.
Equity investing demands lot of emotional maturity. If you have emotional maturity, creating wealth is simple by following few elementary steps. If you don't have emotional maturity, not only that you would not create wealth but may lose some as well.
Getting rich from market has never been easy.
I'm trying to ensure that all our clients create huge wealth from markets in the long run.
For that I need your co-operation of staying the course ignoring ups and downs.
If you can take care of your behaviour, wealth creation would automatically be taken care.

A Quiet Voice

A quite voice
This is a little story that reminds us to listen to that small quiet voice from within -- you never know where it will lead you.
As a teacher of origami (the ancient Japanese art of paper folding) at the LaFarge Lifelong Learning Institute in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, Art Beaudry was asked to represent the school at an exhibit at a large mall in Milwaukee. He decided to take along a couple of hundred folded paper cranes to pass out to people who stopped at his booth.
Before that day, something strange happened -- a voice told him to find a piece of gold foil paper and make a gold origami crane. The voice was so insistent that Art actually found himself rummaging through his collection of origami papers at home until he found one flat, shiny piece of gold foil.
"Why am I doing this?" he asked himself. Art had never worked with the shiny gold paper; it didn't fold as easily or neatly as the crisp multicolored papers. But that little voice kept nudging. Art tried to ignore the voice. "Why gold foil anyway? Paper is much easier to work with," he grumbled.
The voice continued. "Do it! And give it to a special person." By now Art was getting a little cranky. "What special person?" he asked the voice. "You'll know which one," the voice said.
That evening Art carefully folded and shaped the unforgiving gold foil until it became as graceful and delicate as a real crane about to take flight. He packed the exquisite crane in the box along with about 200 other colorful paper cranes he'd made over the previous few weeks.
The next day at the mall, dozens upon dozens of people stopped by Art's booth to ask questions about origami. He demonstrated the art. He folded, unfolded and refolded. He explained the intricate details, the need for sharp creases.
Then, suddenly, there was a woman standing in front of Art. Was this that special person? Art had never seen her before, and she hadn't said a word as she watched him carefully fold a pink piece of paper into a crane with pointed, graceful wings.
Art glanced up at her face, and before he realized it, he found himself reaching for the "gold-foil crane" he'd labored over the night before. Carefully he picked up the gold crane, and gently placed it in the woman's hand.
Art said: "I don't know why, but a voice told me to give you that golden crane. The crane is the ancient symbol of peace," Art said simply.
The woman didn't say a word as she slowly cupped her hand around the fragile bird as if it were alive. When Art looked at her face, he saw tears filling her eyes.
Finally, the woman took a deep breath and said, "My husband died three weeks ago. This is the first time I've been out. Today ...." She wiped her eyes with her free hand, still gently cradling the golden crane with the other. Then she said very quietly, as tears streamed down her face. "Today would have been our 'golden' wedding anniversary."
Then the lady said in a clear voice, "Thank you so much for this beautiful gift. Now I know that
My husband is at peace.
Don't you see? The voice you heard, it was the voice of God, and this beautiful crane is a gift from Him. It's the most wonderful 50th wedding anniversary gift I could have received. Thank you for listening to Holly Spirit within your heart."
And that's how Art learned to listen very carefully when the Holy Spirit speaks to him within, and tells him to do things he may not understand -- now or even later.
Are you listening, my friend? God may be speaking to you.
Thank you & have a relaxed day !!!
